Hits
Okay, you’ve seen those sites that proudly announce we had “800,000″ hits this year. Well I wonder how many of those were just page hits?
Each single web page is a hit, each image on that page is a hit, each JavaScript is a hit, and any file that is retrieved from the web server is a hit. So it is conceivable that a single web page could have 50 hits so the actual number of page hits for the site is 16,000. A huge difference!
Counters
Oh, those visible counters are so outdated, and they do not provide you with any useful information.
What you need to know is where is the visitor is coming from, is it their first time at your site, how long did they stay, what keywords were used to find your site, and other valuable information.
A good web site host will have a decent set of stats available for your site. I do know of an excellent counter that provides extremely useful stats. If you would like to me setup a free account for you and add the script to your web site, please contact me.
Web Standards
If you already have a web site has it been done to the web standards and guidelines (HTML, CSS, XHTML or XML, 508)? Is it viewable, no make that usable, across all of the different browsers?
Web sites that are done according to the web standards and guidelines load quickly. Well they should load quickly. However, if the page involves several large graphics or there are server issues that can affect load time.
Do you know how well is your web site coded ? Do you know what it looks like across the various web browsers? If you are considering other web site developers check out how well they have complied with the standards.

“Best viewed using…”
Well Internet Explorer is not the only browser. It currently does have a larger market share, but if a web designer cannot design for other browsers (see list below) then they aren’t very good at all or lazy or worst of all uninformed.
Browsers:
- Firefox (PC and Mac)
- Mozilla
- Netscape
- Opera
- Safari (Mac)
What’s In : What’s Out

What’s Out
Font tags, complicated nested tables, marquees, blinky things.
Okay, what is it with web site designers still using <font></font> tags???
A friend that is also a web designer/developer is in the process of updating a web site. On one page alone there were over 626 font tags. Aaaccckkk!
Using any uncessary code aka bloated code causes search engine spiders to slow down while roaming a site, adds weight to the page, and let’s not talk about how long it would take just to update all of them.
What’s In
CSS!!! By using an external stylesheet it is possible to completely change the font (not by using font tags) throughout the site by just changing one line of code.
CSS is also a method of presentation. You can do things with it that you just cannot do using font tags.
Marketing Tip #1: Email Address
One of the simplest of things is to use a business email address versus an Earthlink or AOL or other ISP address.
Quite often when an interview takes place a contact email address will be in the news article but not the URL of the business.
